Back in July, Movie Buzzers reported that Tony-winning actress Nina Arianda was poised to star in a biopic about troubled singer Janis Joplin, under the direction of Martha Marcy May Marlene visionary, Sean Durkin, called either Joplin or Janis. However, Precious’ Lee Daniels is jumping on the bandwagon with a rivaling film, Get It While You Can, which will star three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (Trouble with the Curve).
A film about the singer who died in 1970 from a heroin overdose has been ping-ponged all over Hollywood for well over a decade now, leaving critics to wonder if the idea will ever see the light of day. Now that there are dueling stories, we can wonder, which film will succeed? After an underwhelming competition between this year’s Snow White films (yes, given it’s all fantasy-fiction), does anybody really need a double serving of Janis Joplin?
Daniels’ film will focus on a-day-in-the-life of the “Me and Bobby McGee” singer with a script written by Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Berry fans, Ron Terry and Teresa Kounin Terry, according to Slashfilm. Whereas Durkin’s vision will span the final six months of Joplin’s life, featuring a slew of her biggest hits for which the director currently holds the legal rights.
Both films offer different perspectives on a highly anticipated icon that has yet to be seen on the big screen. In addition, both are set for early 2013 productions, but there is no word yet on any additional casting for Get It While You Can.
What do you think about these rivaling productions? Are you looking forward to up-and-coming screen ingénue Arianda making her debut as Joplin? Or are you looking to see Adams give a gritty and perhaps award-winning portrayal?
