With That’s My Boy Adam Sandler will appear in his first R-rated straight comedy (i.e. not one that is a dramedy) since 1996’s Bulletproof. Don’t believe me? Look it up.
…Back? Yes, while most comedians today go for the hard R, Sandler has been the box office king of the PG/PG-13 movie for the last decade and a half. Of course, this has managed to piss off many of Sandler’s older fans who want to see him do something that isn’t Jack & Jill.
So at the very least we have director Sean Anders to thank for getting Sandler to do something different, and, if his interview with Collider is to be believed, he’ll be getting more out of Sandler pretty soon. Anders, who also directed Hot Tub Time Machine and She’s Out of My League, has co-written and will direct Three Mississippi, a comedy starring Will Ferrell about a small-town football rivalry. It was initially reported over a year ago that the film, then titled Turkey Bowl, would reunite Will Ferrell with his The Other Guys co-star Mark Wahlberg. While the former Marky Mark is no longer planning to star in the film (he’s still producing), it appears that Adam Sandler will be taking the role. Anders indicates in his interview that Sandler isn’t locked down yet, but it seems likely we’ll see a pairing of two of SNL’s greatest cast members sometime in the future.
Anders also says some cool bits about Dumb & Dumber 2, which Anders is co-writing the script for. Although he doesn’t spill much, he does say, “Dumb and Dumber is one of my all-time favorite movies. We’re [meaning co-write John Morris] huge Farrelly brothers fans, and it was great to get to know those guys and work with those guys.” Let’s hope it’s just as good as Anders wants it to be!
