Chances are, you not going to recognize the films/filmmakers at New Directors/New Films, but if you’re lucky, you might just catch the works of directors who have yet to make their mark.
In it’s 41st year, New Directors/New Films starts March 21 and runs through April 1 in New York City at both the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Film Society at Lincoln Center.
Each year New Directors/New Films unveils a brand-new lineup of fresh faces on the filmmaking scene. A co-presentation of The Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the festival is now in its 40th year. You may recognize some names from past festivals: Pedro Almodovar, Kelly Reichardt, Atom Egoyan, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, Sally Potter, John Sayles, Steven Spielberg, Wim Wenders, and Wong Kar Wai, for example, were all featured by New Directors/New Films early in their careers.
I was only able to catch a couple of the screenings, but they were quite extraordinary.
Goodbye is a slow, but beautifully shot Iranian film by director Mohammad Rasoulof. The use of space and lack of music underline the main character’s feel of confinement and isolation as she struggles to obtain a visa to leave her country. Truly dramatic, it’s an amazing film. Thursday, March 22nd 2012 | 8:30 PM | FSLC & Saturday, March 24th 2012 | 1:00 PM | MoMA
An Oversimplification of Her Beauty is a pure joy to watch as the director uses repetition and editing in a way that actually creates a story. A brutally honest piece of work, you’ll feel inspired by the creativity of the emerging artist/director, Terrance Nance. He’ll be there for a Q&A at both screenings! Saturday, March 24th 2012 | 4:15 PM | FSLC & Monday, March 26th 2012 | 9 PM | MoMA
