After last year’s Toy Story 3, this year’s Cars 2, and next year’s Monsters Inc. 2, it has started to seem like Pixar is planning to churn out a sequel to one of their beloved animated classics every year. While Toy Story 3 was a huge, well-received hit, many animation fans (including myself) started to wonder if Pixar was mostly abandoning original films in favor of franchising their past hits — the cancellation of Newt in 2010 did not help assuage those worries.
But Bleeding Cool reports that according to Disney CEO Bob Iger in a conference call with shareholders today, Pixar has no plans to make more sequels after Monsters Inc. 2 hits theaters in December 2012 (following the release of Brave in June, making 2012 the first year to see two animated Pixar releases — hooray!) Naturally according to Iger Pixar has a number of projects in the works, but Monsters Inc. 2 will be the last Pixar sequel for at least the next several years. Presumably these do not include Pixar’s first live action films, John Carter of Mars and 1906, both already scheduled for 2012 release.
Despite the news, any Pixar film that you’d like to see have a sequel? Give us your thoughts in the comments below!
