Disney has had a lot of luck winning Best Original Song Oscars, including winning six from 1989 – 1999 and even more recently, winning in 2010 for “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3 and in 2011 for “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets. But 1999 was the last time one of Disney’s own animated films won an Oscar for Best Original Song, though several have been nominated.
Obviously Disney is hoping to add to its overall count and break its losing streak with songs from its own features with Frozen, which is already a big hit at the box office for the studio and has received a lot of praise, especially for its songs, which was written by the husband-wife songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Robert Lopez co-wrote the music for Broadway hits Avenue Q and Book of Mormon). It seems like Disney is already pushing the film’s key song, “Let It Go”, for awards success and has posted the clip on YouTube. The song is performed by Broadway headliner and Tony Award winner Idina Menzel.
