Well this might have been the most unexpected news I’d ever hear associated with the casting for The Expendables 2. Donnie Yen (IP Man, Blade II), one of the biggest Asian martial artists in the past five years, has been approached to play a ” ‘tailor-made’ role” in the sequel to Stallone’s testosterone fueled action flick.
According to Twitch via Hong Kong newspapers, “Donnie Yen and his family were on holidays in the US recently [when] he was invited to dinner by producer Avi Lerner” and was offered the role in the film. This offer has been confirmed by a spokesman for Donnie Yen’s company in which they stated that there was an offer and that Yen is interested but he will only decide once he reads the script, especially since he’s got tons on his plate and offers coming from everywhere.
Having Yen in the film would honestly be the greatest addition the film mcould have next to Chuck Norris and Van Damme. He would be a perfect compliment to Jet Li and Norris and would likely result in some more crazy hand to hand combat fight scenes.
So far names associated with The Expendables 2 include Sylvester Stallone, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Travolta, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis and now Donnie Yen. If this all comes to fruition the only thing I would be able to say is “BEST CAST EVER!”
The film is expected to start production this October with a release set for August 2012. It is being directed by Simon West (Con Air, The Mechanic)
