In case you haven’t heard, the world premiere for Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers happened last night in Hollywood and the twitter reactions have been very positive. Since Disney/Marvel has placed an embargo on all reviews of the film until May, fans will try and prod information from the few that saw the film. Peter Sciretta over at /Film, has some interesting information regarding the film and the infamous end credit scenes which every Marvel film has had.
According to Sciretta, there is a scene that takes place after the animated credit sequence just before the regular credits begin to roll and he said it sets up for another Avengers film in the future, which comes as no shocker. There is no scene once the remaining of the credits conclude which is a bit disappointing. However, during the press junket today with the cast from the film along with Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, Robert Downey Jr.dropped a bomb on everyone just before leaving the session. He said that the cast and crew are actually shooting an additional scene tonight (Thursday) for the film. WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!
Germain Lussier another /Film writer was in attendance during the junket and said that everyone there just started laughing when RDJ made the claim and took it as a joke, it wasn’t until he looked over at Kevin Feige and noticed that he seemed very irritated about the statement. With the press junket now buzzing about this statement, RDJ reiterated that he was not joking and said “No More Questions!” Lussier was able to snag a one on one with Feige after the junket in which he has the following quote in regards to Downey’s statement, “Do you always trust everything Robert Downey Jr. tells you?” I for one have no reason to think RDJ would lie to me, so yes, yes I do believe him.
Joss Whedon has since come out and said they are not filming any additional scenes and that the rumors are false. So lets think about this a bit more.
Whedon originally was brought on to film the end credit scene for Thor after production had been completed for months. Who’s to say this couldn’t be done again and say maybe Shane Black steps in and films something that leads into Iron Man 3? Or maybe JUST maybe Marvel could use this opportunity to give Edgar Wright and his Ant-Man script a go and get the ball running on that.
It isn’t that insane to imagine especially since Henry Pym (Ant-Man) is part of The Avengers in the comics and fans have been asking for this film for years. Not to mention there are a hundred different ways they could incorporate and film this without actually having to cast someone as Pym. They could easily do something regarding a scientist or a lab and Pym Particles being discovered or even just focus on the helmet Pym wears. This is just speculation but is it really that far off to believe? They did this with Captain America in The Incredible Hulk and Chris Evans was just one of many being considered for the role still. Just to add fuel to the fire, here is a tweet from Wright just last week
Was just back behind the camera for the first time in nearly two years. Can’t say on what, but it was cool…
Could this be the moment Marvel fanboys have been waiting for? Could this create enough buzz to propel The Avengers past The Dark Knight Rises this summer? So many questions and so very little answers. Damn you Marvel and the mind games you play on us! DAMN YOU!
Update: The Playlist sat down and spoke with Mark Ruffalo who had the following to say about shooting the additional scene.
We’re shooting a scene tonight. I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. All I know is that someone came in with the costume and said, ‘Here’s some wardrobe. We don’t know where you’re going to be or what you’re doing.’ ” Ruffalo said. We asked if it will be in the “The Avengers” when it hits theaters Ruffalo added, “Yeah. So I’m like, ‘All right, when are we doing that?’ Today after we’re done.
