With the way the economy is today, it’s logical for people to cut out entertainment expenses and usually the first to go are the movies. I won’t lie, a trip to your local theater can put a serious dent in you wallet and it only gets worse if you have children and you have to buy concessions. For a family of four to go see a movie on the weekend and get food and drinks, you can expect to spend $65+ depending on where you live and if the film is 3D, Imax, or the real killer, both!
Good news though, The National Association of Theater Owner, has recently released a study that shows ticket prices are actually falling for a change. The average price for a movie ticket fell to $7.86 in the first quarter of 2011, down from $8.01 in the fourth quarter of 2010. The average movie ticket price for 2010 ended up being $7.89.
I know it might not seem like a lot, but something is better then nothing. I was actually shocked that this figure was so low, because the last time I checked, the theaters in Dallas are about $10 if not more to see a flick and I know in New York it’s almost double that.
The reason for the decline according to industry insiders is due to the lack of 3D Box Office hits in the first part of 2011. This is very interesting but what we really need to see is how much this figure increases over the summer with every blockbuster pretty much coming out in 3D.
If you still don’t feel like spending all of your hard earned money at a movie theater, I recommend trying to find a Drive-In theater somewhere in your vicinity. They are usually located outside the major cities and can really save you a ton of money. Usually you can see two to three new movies for about $6 a person and the concessions are much cheaper then at a major theater.
