I’ve never seen William Lustig’s popular cult flick Maniac before. but I have heard good things and enough of them to make me want to seek out the original. My only concern is that after seeing the full trailer for the Alexandre Aja produced, Franck Khalfoun directed remake of the film starring Elijah Wood, I may want to wait to avoid falling into the trap of rooting for and comparing it to the original giving the remake very little chance of success.
The entire film rests on Wood’s performance and while I am a bit skeptical at the thought of him playing a killer, I think it actually makes perfect sense. Think about it, a young, baby faced man ripping scalps off women. You’d never expect him as a likely suspect. The trailer, which features some boobs, some killing and some emotionally torn voice-over, leaves me hanging in the balance but I definitely want to see this film and think Wood will pull it off.
The film will be screening soon at Cannes and that’s when we can expect to hear if it’s going to be as good as it looks. Take a look at the trailer and synopsis below and let us know what you think of Elijah as Frank the killer.
Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt.
Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.
A 21st century Jack the Ripper set in present-day LA, MANIAC is a re-boot of the cult film considered by many to be the most suspenseful slasher movie ever made – an intimate, visually daring, psychologically complex and profoundly horrific trip into the downward spiralling nightmare of a killer and his victims.
