Ask most people who Spider-Man’s first love was and, mostly because of the Sam Raimi films, they’ll say Mary Jane Watson. However, in the original comics Peter Parker was never a one woman Spider-Man, and his first love was really Gwen Stacy (played by Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3… though she didn’t do much!
Now that Sony is planning to restart the Spider-Man franchise, they’ve taken the opportunity to correct that misconception. Emma Stone — best known for her roles in Zombieland and Easy A — has been cast as Gwen Stacy in the upcoming reboot of Spider-Man.
What’s odd about this is, up until now, Mary Jane was expected to be the romantic interest in the film, but with Stone being cast as Gwen Stacy this opens the door to having perhaps both of Peter Parker’s main squeezes in the film. Either way, having Gwen Stacy in the film does immediately differentiate the new film series from the Raimi trilogy.
The film, planned for a 2012 release, will star Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man and will be directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). This will be only be Webb’s second feature film since beginning his career. Buzz has been lukewarm so far, but let us know what you think about the casting below!
