Warner Bros. has historically done gangster films better than any other studio (although Paramount certainly has a potential claim on that title since it, you know, released a few films under The Godfather trilogy), and it seems like Warner Bros. wants to continue this rep with its upcoming Gangster Squad, which is lining up a very impressive cast. After all, gangster films are always great opportunities to garner awards and accolades — they’re just generally so damn good and resonate deeply with audiences — so it’s no surprise that actors line up to appear in them. The latest addition to the cast is Emma Stone (Zombieland, Spider-Man), who will be re-teaming with the film’s director, Ruben Fleischer, who directed Stone in Zombieland.
Stone joins Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen, a real-life Los Angeles crime lord, and Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin as the titular police squad who aim to take him down. Variety reports that Stone will play “Jean, a sharp-tongued siren caught in a love triangle with Gosling’s character and Penn, who portrays mobster Mickey Cohen.” Love trianlge? Uhh… I’m not looking forward to seeing Stone doing… things with 50 year old Penn on screen.
Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Bryan Crantson, and Michael Pena are also set to star in the film, which is being written by Will Beall (TV’s Castle) and is set for a 2013 release.
