It’s not easy making a sequel to a film released years ago, and frankly, it can often be a letdown. Just ask fans of Star Wars (with 16 years between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace), Indiana Jones (with 19 years between The Last Crusade and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), Wall Street (23 years between the original and this summer’s sequel), and any classic Disney animated film (too many to list!) December’s TRON: Legacy comes out twenty-eight years after 1982’s TRON, which is certainly one of the longest sequel gaps of all time.
Still, there has been some big interest and positive buzz for TRON: Legacy, particularly due to the return of Jeff Bridges, who starred in the original. After all, since 1982 Jeff Bridges has turned in some legendary performances and won an Oscar, so we have to give him a lot of credit for returning to a role for a film that was essentially a cult classic of the arcade age when he could have easily passed it up for another Oscar-baiting role. On top of that Bridges is playing two roles in the new film which will make this film much more interesting to watch. What do I mean? Hit “more” to find out in the latest trailer!
Bridges will not only play Kevin Flynn, his character from the original TRON, but a younger version of himself, Clu 2.0, the film’s villain. The film “de-ages” Bridges with CGI, producing a somewhat non-human artificial version of Bridges that will probably haunt my nightmares for the next several weeks. I’ve heard some grumbling about the result, but I think it fits the character, who’s supposed to be not only artificial, but also evil. The film’s trailer does a successful job of setting up the story of the new film for all of those who haven’t seen the original film over the last twenty-eight years, which I’m sure is a concern for the studio. If nothing else, TRON: Legacy will provide some great sci-fi action in a year which has unfortunately seen very little of it!
TRON: Legacy is set for release on December 17 and stars the returning Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner alongside newcomers Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski in his feature film debut and produced by the original film’s director Steven Lisberger.
