It’s been a while since I’ve heard some news about the casting for the latest big screen version of Les Miserables. It seems that all the debate over who should play the coveted role of Eponine, singer of the famous ballad “On My Own,” finally has a face. Musical theater veteran, Samantha Barks, who appeared in the 25th anniversary concert for the show in 2010, has been cast in the role.
Famous names like Lea Michele (Glee), country singer Taylor Swift, Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers), and recent Golden Globe nominee Evan Rachel Wood (Mildred Pierce) were all rumored to be in the running (as per my previous article here), but Us Weekly reports “theater mogul and Les Miserables’ original creator Cameron Mackintosh announced the news Tuesday evening at the Manchester Palace,” as Barks was a featured performer in their production of Oliver!
Also, Amanda Seyfried (In Time) has been cast as Cosette, the daughter of Fantine, played by Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises). We’ve previous seen Seyfried’s singing chops in the 2008 movie adaptation of another Broadway hit, Mamma Mia!
For those of you who haven’t been following the story, also on board to star are Hugh Jackman (Real Steel), Russell Crowe (The Man with the Iron Fists), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech), Sacha Baron Cohen (Hugo), and Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn).
Do you think it’s a wise choice for director Tom Hooper to pick a no-name for such an important role in the film? Are you excited to see Seyfried as Cosette?
