Director Sam Raimi hasn’t been up to much after Columbia and Marvel more-or-less pushed him off Spider-Man 4 in favor of a reboot. Since then he’s only directed one movie, the successful horror film Drag Me to Hell. Whenever Raimi has a hole in his schedule rumors always swirl around him getting together with Bruce Campbell and making another film in the cult classic Evil Dead series, which hasn’t seen a new film since 1992’s Army of Darkness. There has been even more rumblings on that front in the last few days, which lead to the official announcement that Raimi, along with Bob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, will be producing a remake of The Evil Dead, with first-time feature director Fede Alvarez directing. Alvarez has made a number of short films, most notably Panic Attack!
According to the Deadline report, Alvarez co-wrote the script with fellow newcomer Rodo Sayagues, which is going for a re-write by Diablo Cody, the writer of Juno and Jennifer’s Body.
The 1981 original was made on a shoestring budget — $375,000, according to IMDB — so it’ll be fascinating to see what Raimi and company will be able to do with a much bigger budget. It seems rather likely that Campbell won’t be starring, but we can expect him to be involved in some way on-screen (although the film has a small cast). Also, will the film retain it’s “campy” approach? What do you think the producers should do? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
