Here at Movie Buzzers we’re big fans of writer/director John Michael McDonagh’s dark comedy, The Guard. If you haven’t seen it yet, see it, it’s a hilarious investigative Irish film starring Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson. Well, after nearly three years of waiting, McDonagh is back with his next film and it looks to be just as dark but also just as funny.
His new film, titled Calvary, brings back Gleeson to the spotlight, though instead of being a cop he’s now a priest, and a good one at that. The premise of the film is pretty simple, during a confession, a man tells Gleeson that he is going to kill him, but before he does he will give him a week to do some housekeeping and get everything in order before he dies. The film turns into a mystery and Gleeson prepares to meet his fate while also trying to figure out who might be the one plotting to kill him. To top it all off, the film features some faces you might recognize including Chris O’Dowd, Aidan Gillan, Dylan Moran and Kelly Reilly.
The film looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun, but fun with a dark and interesting story, much like The Guard. Check out the trailer below and add this one to your must-watch list of 2014 because I guarantee it’s going to be really, really good.
Calvary’s Father James (Brendan Gleeson) is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (Kely Reilly) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral—and often comic—problems, he feels sinister forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.
Calvary is set to open on August 1, 2014
