Movie Buzzers had the wonderful opportunity to attend a special New York screening of Red Flag, the latest film by writer/director/actor Alex Karpovsky (check out my review here!) I was able to get some great shots of the main cast.
The adorable Jennifer Prediger
The hilarious Ornul Turkel (who is a great guy to chat with!)
The main cast (from left to right): Caroline White, Karpovsky, Prediger, Turkel
I got a few moments to fire off a few questions to Karpovsky about Red Flag and Rubberneck. I also tried to get anything I could out of him about his role in the Joel and Ethan Coen‘s Inside Llewyn Davis, but I guess he couldn’t say much!
Q: Red Flag is a unique concept for a film. Where did the idea for it come from?
Karpovsky: Well, I really did have to go on this screening tour of Woodpecker and I thought instead of it just being this thing where you just present your movie I wanted to kind of have fun while we were doing it, do something creative, so I kind of got a bunch of friends together into a group and we decided to make a movie about a filmmaker on tour with his movie, so that’s how it started.
Q: What’s the difference between directing a comedy like Red Flag and a thriller like Rubberneck?
Karpovsky: Well, there are a lot of differences. I mean, I feel like my “main — quote, unquote — job as a director more than anything else is to be the tonal police to make sure the tone of the movie is where you want it to be, that it’s consistent and that everyone is acting in the same movie. And that was definitely what I feel was my major responsiblity with Red Flag, to make sure we were both acting in this absurd black comedy and with Rubberneck to make sure we’re both acting in a slow-burning psychological thriller.
Q: Can you tell us anything about your role in the Coen brothers’ next movie?
Karpovsky: It’s called Inside Llewyn Davis, and I think based on the trailer it’s going to be really awesome. And based on the fact that it’s the Coen brothers. And Adam Driver is in it, who plays Adam on Girls.
Special thanks to Tribeca Film for inviting us!
