One of the most anticipated films of the year in my book that isn’t top of mind for most people yet is Neill Blomkamp‘s second feature film, Elysium. Much like his amazing film District 9, Elysium is another socio-political sci-fi pic but much larger in scope, technology and action so, in other words, it looks phenomenal.
Set in the future when Earth is overpopulated, rundown and reserved for the poor, the citizens will do anythign they can to make their way to the sky where the wealthy dwell in a place called Elysium. The film focuses on Matt Damon’s character as he tries to do the impossible and make his way to Elysium, if he succeeds he could not only save his life but bring equality to these vastly different worlds. The film also co-stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, and Alice Braga so I suspect we won’t just get a visually good movie, we’ll get one with great acting and characters.
The trailer is impressive and though we won’t get to see the fim until August, this trailer should be enough to hold us over until then even if Sony will be doing a significant marketing push throughout the coming months. Much like District 9, all I can say is that Elysium looks like it’ll be a sci-fi film to be remembered.
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Elysium is set to hit theaters on August 9th.
