Tony Scott‘s Top Gun,one of the greatest films of all times (in my opinion), is getting the royal Hollywood screw job and is being converted to 3D for a limited theatrical release. The film is scheduled for release sometime in 2012, but not much more is known at this time.
The Hollywood Reporter said a converted version of the ‘Danger Zone’ aerial flight sequence was previewed at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam on Monday. The conversion is being done by Legend3D which has recently done 3D work on Conan the Barbarian , Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Green Lantern.
“As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I [know] they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward,” Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel said. “I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight.”
Goose is probably rolling over in his grave right now screaming “WHYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!”
I’m not sure which is worse, the 3D conversion of this great film, or the studios thinking that a sequel to this film is needed. Either way, they need to step off and leave the film be.
