The Peanuts characters — Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy and the rest — have a distinct look from the fifty years they were drawn by creator Charles Schulz and the 60-plus years they’ve been part of pop culture. So when Fox announced that it was making a CGI Peanuts animated movie, many expressed concern about whether or not computers could give the Peanuts gang the same look.
Though the movie won’t be released until 2015, Fox and Blue Sky Studios have released a teaser of Peanuts and it looks AMAZING. Not only did Blue Sky get the animation right, but Charlie Brown’s voice, Snoopy’s laugh, and the use of Vince Guaraldi‘s classic Peanuts music are all reminiscent of the Peanuts cartoons that at least three generations of children have grown up with.
If Fox had worked this hard on capturing the perfect look for the movie, hopefully they’ve worked as hard on making sure the story is right. Schulz died in 2000 (the day before the final Peanuts strip was scheduled to be published), so he obviously didn’t have a hand in writing this movie like he did in most of the Peanuts television specials during his lifetime. However, with his son Craig Schulz and grandson Bryan Schulz co-writing the script, I think it’s fair to say that it’s in safe hands.
