Arnold Schwarzenegger is definitely trying to get his career back on track now with an extended role in The Expendables 2 and his own comeback film Last Stand. Of course, no one is surprised that Schwarzenegger is also turning toward his tried-and-true Terminator franchise, in which he has appeared in all four films (with the last film being a digital-face-thing cameo… I don’t know exactly what it was, but it looked awesomely like Arnold from twenty years ago as it kicked the crap out of Christian Bale). As a result, Schwarzenegger and producer Megan Ellison (who currently holds the Terminator rights) had plans for two Terminator films in the pipeline with Justin Lin, of Fast Five and the upcoming Fast Six (though it has no official title) fame, as director.
But Deadline reports that Lin has had to say “Hasta La Vista, Baby” to the Terminator franchise since production is set to start at the end of 2012… which will apparently conflict with Lin’s production of Fast Six. Although Lin still wants to direct if the project can be held off, Schwarzenegger and Ellison want to get the films into production as soon as possible because according to the same Deadline article, in 2018 “certain rights revert back to Cameron due to a stipulation in copyright law.” That Cameron is of course James Cameron, who directed the first two Terminator films and is currently in Avatar land for the foreseeable future. Nonetheless, the article also suggests that Schwarzenegger has been able to convince his friend Cameron to attend several meetings about the franchise’s future, so perhaps we might see a Terminator 5 or 6 featuring story elements from James Cameron himself.
Well I don’t know about you readers, but I’m open for more Terminator — especially if Arnold and Cameron are involved. What do you think?
