The Other Guys is probably the weakest collaboration between director Adam McKay and Will Ferrell (the two also made Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Step Brothers together, so yeah, tough to beat), but there were still a lot of laughs in it. After all, as a native New Yorker, any time someone works a Mister Softee truck (which, during the late spring and summer, can be found all over the city) into a film, it makes me happy. It’s no surprise then that Deadline reports that Ferrell and The Other Guys co-star Mark Wahlberg have signed to appear as a duo in Turkey Bowl. The Warner Bros. film will feature the two as rival high school football coaches with their teams heading for a Thanksgiving Day showdown.
Also announced for the cast is Alec Baldwin, who will play Wahlberg‘s father. The script will be written by Robert Carlock and Scott Silveri, who write TV’s 30 Rock (it will be the first film for both of them) based on an idea by Owen Burke, a Funny-Or-Die writer, and while Adam McKay is one of the film’s producers (along with Ferrell, Wahlberg, and Chris Henchy), there’s no word on whether or not McKay will direct.
While I look forward to most of Will Ferrell‘s movies (especially when Adam McKay is involved), I am a bit unsure about this one. Didn’t Ferrell wear out his “sports comedy” schtick with Semi-Pro? I guess football was the one sport he hasn’t tackled in a film yet (Ha! Pun totally intended!) The whole coaching angle does make this seem like Kicking and Screaming too, and while I enjoyed that movie I just hope there’s enough going on with this film that’s different so it doesn’t seem like rehashed Ferrell bits.
But that’s only my opinion — what’s yours? Let us know in the comments!
