Will Ferrell has been making the interview rounds lately to promote Everything Must Go (check out Melissa’s review here!) and has had a lot to say about future projects that he’s interested in and hopes will get off the ground in the near future. Of greatest interest to me is his interview with Cinema Blend, in which he rips Paramount a new one for not getting on board for Anchorman 2 (which I also ripped Paramount for here!). Interestingly enough, according to Ferrell his plans for Anchorman 2 are that it wouldn’t start as a film project but instead as a musical:
We were going to do almost a reverse… almost like how the Marx brothers used to do – we were going to do a Broadway musical and then have a film come out after the stage show. Everyone we tell the idea loves it, except for the studio that owns the rights. Ball’s in their [Paramount’s] courts, but they’re being idiots.”
I got to admit, I’d love to see Will Ferrell in an Anchorman musical, but I could imagine how incredibly difficult it would be to get the original cast of Anchorman all back to do such an engagement (even a limited one!) Unfortunately, either way Paramount apparently told Ferrell “We’ve run the numbers and it’s not a good fit,” so we’re still out of luck on Anchorman 2.
Ferrell also told Cinema Blend that since the Anchorman sequel is a no-go, he’s looking at a sequel to Step Brothers instead. He claims he just met with co-star John C. Reilly and “were kicking around some ideas” for it. I think they could just go the easy route — add another step brother to the mix. But that’s probably why I don’t write comedy scripts.
For you Zoolander fans waiting for a sequel, I’m afraid there’s no good news: Ferrell says he knows nothing about that project, although writer Justin Theroux claimed late last year that a part for Ferrell‘s villainous Mugatu is in the script.
What about some original films, though? Well in a separate interview with Collider, Ferrell brought up Southern Rivals, which will pit himself versus Zach Galifianakis as dueling Southern politicians both seeking to run for President. There has been a little bit of mumbling about this project already, and I’m excited for it — even if it’s just a chance to see Galifianakis try something else besides his typical aloof-creepy-manchild character. Southern Rivals will be directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents) and the script is by Chris Henchy (The Other Guys). The film is set for a Fall 2012 release, just in time for the next Presidential election.
Well… that’s quite a bit of Will Ferrell news. What piece of news interests you the most? Tell us what you’re waiting for in the comments below!
