I’ve gotten more laughs and enjoyment out of Wes Anderson‘s idiosyncratic films than just about any other directors working today. I know there are some people who dislike Anderson‘s brand of comedy, but I think a lot of people might just be sick of the “quirky” type comedies that have tried to follow the Anderson model (often unsuccessfully).
So I’m happy to see from IndieWire that Anderson has signed a new deal with Focus Features to release his next film, Moonrise Kingdom.
IndieWire provides the following plot summary for us: “Set on an island off the coast of New England in the 1960s, Moonrise Kingdom follows a young boy and girl falling in love. When they are moved to run away together, various factions of the town mobilize to search for them and the town is turned upside down – which might not be such a bad thing. Bruce Willis plays the town sheriff; two-time Academy Award nominee Edward Norton is cast as a camp leader; Academy Award nominee Bill Murray and Academy Award winner Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents; the cast also includes Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman. The young boy and girl are played by Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward.”
Typically for Anderson, that doesn’t tell us much. Although he is known for casting many of the same actors in his films, the only Anderson “regulars” set for this upcoming film are Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman. As for the newcomers to the Anderson fold, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, and Ed Norton are obviously good “fits” for the type of cinematic world Anderson creates, but I’m most fascinated by how Bruce Willis will fit into that — I love Willis in some of his more “serious” films like 12 Monkeys and Unbreakable, so I can’t wait to see how he ends up pulling off a quirky, unfocused male with daddy issues in an Anderson film, as he undoubtedly will end up having. Then again, he is playing a sheriff, so it’s not too far out in left field for Willis.
The script is written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, who previously collaborated on the script for the wonderful Darjeeling Limited. It’s set for a 2012 release.
