After I reported on the status of Fox’s Daredevil reboot last week, it seems that Fox is willing to let its rights to the property to revert to Marvel, which of course is now owned by Disney. Director Joe Carnahan (The Grey) was next in line to try to get a Daredevil film in production by October 10 (which is when Fox’s rights expire), but Carnahan has since gone on his Twitter to say “Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.” Several hours later he followed it up with “Guys. To clarify. DD pitch was tremendous and everyone flipped for it. The clock ticked down at Fox, that’s why it went tits up” with a promise to reveal the details on his take at a later time. What he ended up revealing was his “sizzle reel,” a montage of comic panels and clips from other films that he used to establish the “feel” for his vision for Fox execs. Check it out here:
Looks intriguing, right? Regardless, it seems like any tactic that Fox tried with Marvel/Disney to buy more time (including a reported buy unconfirmed odd trade involving Galactus and the Silver Surfer) didn’t work. Of course, Carnahan might be able to make his Daredevil film at Disney, but I doubt Disney will allow him to film a Daredevil film this dark (and set in the violent New York City of 1973, which would remove the character from The Avengers‘ timeline… oddly, the Daredevil comics of 1973 were not set in New York but in San Francisco, where Daredevil moved to be with his then-girlfriend Black Widow, believe it or not!)
While this means Daredevil can now be part of the greater Marvel movie universe, keep in mind that Daredevil has never been a team player and only joined the Avengers in the comics very recently. Honestly, the street-level Daredevil really wouldn’t fit at all in the cosmic direction that the Avengers franchise is going, so I really hope that Disney/Marvel keeps a bit of distance between Daredevil and, say, Thor, at least for a little while.
