Fox Searchlight Pictures is the company that brought audiences films like Whip It!, Adam, The Good Girl, The Last King of Scotland, Napoleon Dynamite, and The Ice Storm. This year, they celebrate their 15th anniversary of film success with much excitement over all the buzz worthy movies expected this winter. According to ScreenRant.com, “Searchlight continues to produce and distribute award-winning quality work,” despite the less than impressive collection of movies released over the last few years by their parent company, the Blockbuster / franchise-driven 20th Century Fox. Back in 1995, Ed Burns’ The Brothers McMullen, a Sundance Film Festival and Independent Spirit Award winner, was Fox Searchlight’s first release. Since then, they have been able to churn out several films a year. Big titles include Slumdog Millionaire, Juno, Boys Don’t Cry, Garden State, Little Miss Sunshine, (500) Days of Summer, and Crazy Heart. All of these have been highly acclaimed as favorites at the Golden Globes and / or Oscars in previous years. What has made the company so successful is that it puts compelling stories with a stellar cast as a priority over profitability estimations. This is evident with films like Sideways, Once, The Wrestler, Thank You For Smoking, and The Savages.
Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle has reunited with Fox Searchlight with the upcoming 127 Hours, which stars Golden Globe winner James Franco, Golden Globe nominee Amber Tamblyn, and Kate Mara (Iron Man 2). Also, Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky premieres Black Swan in December, starring Academy Award nominee Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), two-time Academy Award nominee Winona Ryder, and Golden Globe nominee (in Italy) Vincent Cassel. In addition, Conviction, starring two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell (Moon), and Never Let Me Go with Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley, with Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) are expected to garner acting nods this award’s season.
Next year, two-time Academy Award nominee Brad Pitt stars alongside two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn in The Tree of Life, a story about the loss of innocence within a family in the 1950s. For 2010, Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can stars two-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams as the fated singer / songwriter.
