Sesame Street has been on the air continuously for over forty years, which is something you can’t say about most brands, and has been franchised into international versions across the globe. There are very few people under the age of forty who haven’t grown up watching Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Grover, Cookie Monster, The Count, and yes, Elmo. Meanwhile, last year Jim Henson‘s Muppets had their highest-grossing and perhaps best-received movie in their history. Seems like a no-brainer to make a Sesame Street movie, right?
The Hollywood Reporter has the exclusive news that 20th Century Fox has bought the rights to make a Sesame Street theatrical film, which would be the series’ third (after 1985’s Follow That Bird and 1999’s The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland).
Fox has gotten the rights to make a new movie based on the series, and has wisely picked Joey Mazzarino, who has worked on the show since 1992 first as a puppeteer then as a writer and director, to write the script. Producers include Shawn Levy, Michael Aguilar, Mark Gordon, Guymon Casady and likely Sesame Workshop, which owns the series. Of course, we can expect all of our favorite Muppets to appear (at least the Sesame Street group — the Muppets characters are owned by Disney and rarely have the brands crossed over since Henson’s death).
Of course, this will likely be a children’s film rather than the nostalgic The Muppets, but that’s probably the way it should be!
