Fans of the Captain America comics can pretty much figure out the major plot happenings in the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger from the title alone (which I won’t spoil here, but OH MAN AWESOMENESS!), and one of the major characters in the Winter Soldier storyline is Crossbones, one of the Red Skull’s chief henchmen. With Hugo Welling pretty clear in recent interviews about his lack of interest in appearing in future Marvel films, Marvel is moving ahead with using Crossbones as the main villain of the Captain America sequel, Captain America: Winter Soldier.
Marvel announced earlier this week that Frank Grillo will portray Crossbones in the upcoming sequel. Crossbones was introduced in the comics in 1989 as a master mercenary who soon fell under the sway of Red Skull and even became romantically involved with the Red Skull’s daughter. One issue I see is that visually Crossbones doesn’t look much different from Batman’s Ban, and I think the filmmakers will have to be sure to make sure Crossbones doesn’t come off as a Bane ripoff (especially since Grillo starred opposite Tom Hardy in Warrior, who also played Bane).
Captain America: Winter Soldier is set for a release on April 4, 2014. Along with Chris Evans returning as Cap, Anthony Mackie will star as Cap’s sidekick The Falcon, and Scarlett Johansson will appear as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders will return as Agent Maria Hill, and, of course, so will Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. The screenplay is by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who wrote the original film and both also co-wrote the upcoming Thor sequel) and will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (You, Me and Dupree).
