When news first broke about a remake ofo the 80’s classic vampire film Fright Night, some people were very upset and thought this was a terrible idea because the original is a classic and you can’t remake a classic like that. At first I was one of the believers, I loved the original and think it was one of the greatest horror films of the 80’s, if that’s what you want to consider the film. However after watching the first trailer for the film, I can say that I’m excited for it and look forward to its release this summer.
The film is not a straight remake, it will be different, but it will still have the same premise as the original. The remake was written by Marty Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and directed by Craig Gillespie. The film stars Colin Farrell as the vampire Jerry Dandrige, Anton Yelchin as Charley Brewster, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Evil Ed, Toni Collette as Charley’s mom and David Tennan as a new version of Peter Vincent.
In case you don’t know what the film is about here is a brief synopsis of the film:
Senior Charley Brewster finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed . But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—and everyone, including Charley’s mom, doesn’t notice. After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charley comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he’s telling the truth, Charley has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.
The trailer looks really good and you can definatly see the variance between the original and the new one, but it seems to be for the best. The casting works and Farrell looks like he will be just as intense as Chris Sarandon was in the original film. The only worry I have for the film is, of course, the 3D, simply because I’m not a fan of it but also the new Peter Vincent. I don’t really know how I feel about the wanna-be Criss Angel look he has going on. The original was a late night television vampire hunter who was actually a phoney. I just don’t know about this part of the film but I’m still excited for the film regardless. Check out the Trailer below along with a comparison of the original and new poster.
