Since the characters appear in both J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Lord of the Rings and the prequel novel The Hobbit, it seemed obvious that Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), and Andy Serkis (Gollum) would reprise their roles from Peter Jackson‘s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Oddly enough though, according to the latest knowledge, none of these actors have signed up for The Hobbit films. Or have not yet, anyway.
Instead, we’ve discovered that Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) and Orlando Bloom (Legolas) have agreed to film cameos in The Hobbit films even though none of those characters appear in The Hobbit novel! Well you can now add Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins) to that list of confusing cameos, because it has been announced that he will be returning for The Hobbit film… although Frodo wasn’t even born at the time of the events in The Hobbit!
Just what is the usually brilliant Peter Jackson doing to our beloved Middle-Earth? Hit “more” to find out the latest rumors on how Frodo will fit into The Hobbit films, but be warned… it may spoil some of the surprise!
According to TheOneRing.net, which is THE source for all Tolkien film news, Frodo will be featured in the opening of both Hobbit films being told the story of The Hobbit by his uncle Bilbo Baggins, star of The Hobbit (to be played by Martin Freeman) as a framing device. This definitely could work since Bilbo did write down the story (as seen in the Lord of the Rings films). Still, it is very surprising. I guess we’ll see how it works out!
The films will shortly begin shooting in New Zealand for an anticipated two-part release in December 2012 and December 2013. Peter Jackson will be directing from a script written by himself, Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh (who wrote the Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Guillermo del Toro.
What’s your take on the cameo by Frodo? Is Jackson trying too hard to connect the films, or do you have faith in his ability? Let us know below!
