Way back in August of last year it was reported that a Japanese remake of Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven was in the works. Since then we’ve seen one or two teaser trailer but nothing of complete substance. Well it seems the marketing team is ready to go full steam ahead as they recently released a full length trailer for Yurusarezaru Mono (A Thing That Can’t Be Forgiven).
This samurai remake of Unforgiven is set in 1880 and instead of following an aging gunslinger taking on one last job, it’s a retired samurai warrior doing the deed. Watanabe is awesome and I look forward to seeing it when it eventually makes it stateside. The question is, who will pick it up?
Lee Sang-il, the acclaimed director of Hula Girls and Villain (Akunin), leads the charge with Ken Watanabe, Akira Emoto and Koichi Sato starring in lead roles. I can’t make any comparisons to the original because it has been such a long time since I’ve seen it and that was during a film viewing binge but, what I can say, is that the trailer looks beautiful and seems to be pretty effective at conveying the story even without having English subtitles.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think? Are you a fan of the original? do you think this translates well to the samurai genre?
