From medieval fantasy to Norse gods? That should be a do-able transition!
According to Variety, Brian Kirk, who has directed episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and Luck and Showtime’s Dexter, is Marvel’s top choice to direct Thor 2, set for a July 26, 2013 release. If it all works out, it will be Kirk‘s first feature film. A sequel to Thor is a no-brainer: it’s currently the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year, even though Captain America is catching up (but Thor still blows Cap out of the water overseas, as Thor has made almost $450 million worldwide compared to Cap‘s $200 million). Either way, Marvel always intended to make a sequel, even though it was announced relatively early that original director Kenneth Branagh chose not to return.
The script for Thor 2 is being written by Don Payne, who co-wrote the first film. It will certainly star Chris Hemsworth along with several other cast members from Thor. And let’s not kid ourselves — Samuel L. Jackson will likely pop in at some point, too.
