Ah yes. Welcome back to Ghostbuster Purgatory, where any rumours can become reality and where reality can become, well, a ghost. Ghostbusters 3 has been rumored now for quite some time and we have also heard some pretty interesting rumors/updates about the film lately. Probably the most recent one was that Bill Murry shredded the script and sent it back with a note saying that no one will pay to see fat, old men chasing ghosts. Well Dan Aykroyd has once again come to the rescue to clear some rumors up and also provide more info on the film.
Empire had the privilege to welcome Aykroyd into their office for a webchat and got him to speak on the status and rumors of Ghostbusters 3.
The first question was regarding Rick Moranis and if they could get him to come out of retirement for the film:
If we can get the script to Ghostbusters 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant.
This question led Aykroyd to hint that Bill Murray might not return as Peter Venkman and that a new actor could come in and play the role. This is the first time we have heard that they would be willing to move on without Murray and it comes as a bit of a shocker. Murray is easily the most recognizable character in the films and without him, the Ghostbusters would just seem a bit off.
Aykroyd then commented about the script and the likely hood of the film being made,
The script must be perfect. We cannot release a film that is any less than that. We have more work to do.
Nothing too shocking there. I think everyone would be perfectly content if they weren’t able to hammer out a solid script as oppose to putting out something cheesy that could tarnish the franchise.
Going back to the earlier rumor about Murray shredding the script he received for the film, Aykroyd debunked the rumor.
Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work
So there we have it, once again we get something but at the same time it’s really nothing. I’m very curious to see if this film ever gets made. The way things have been going thus far, I see it become more of a fantasy then a reality.
