Almost anyone who knows how long it takes to make a movie realized that there was no way that director J.J. Abrams was going to have Star Trek 2 ready for its penciled-in release date of June 29, 2012 considering that because of Super 8 (which Abrams wrote and directed) and Cowboys & Aliens (which Star Trek writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof co-wrote and produced) the team hasn’t even completed a script yet. So it is no surprise that Deadline is reporting the long-expected news that Paramount has now set the G.I. Joe sequel (now apparently titled G.I. Joe: Retaliation) for that release date, pushing Star Trek 2 to at least a late 2012 release. No word if Snake-Eyes stole it ninja-style.
In the meantime, G.I. Joe: Retaliation has added Joe Mazzello (yes, the kid from Jurassic Park) as Mouse, a little-known character who appeared in the failed G.I. Joe spinoff that only lasted one episode and one toy line. They never even made a toy out of Mouse, believe it or not, who was a computer hacker who’s significantly bigger than Mazzello. Whether the filmmakers will bother using Mouse as the same character is anyone’s guess, but the name fits someone who is a hacker.
Mazzello joins Channing Tatum (Duke), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Roadblock), Ray Park (Snake Eyes), Lee Byung-hun (Storm Shadow), Stephen Martines (Cross-Country), Ray Stevenson (Firefly), Adrianne Palicki (Lady Jayne), and the rumored RZA (Blind Master), Elodie Yung (Jinx), and D.J. Cotrona (Flint). The film will be directed by Jon Chu (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never). The script was written by Zombieland duo Paul Wenick and Rhett Reese.
