I am going to dub Guillermo del Toro’s giant monster vs robots pic, Pacific Rim, his Star Wars. He is creating a new world in the future and it looks like it is going to be glorious and chock full of drama and violence. Chris and I raved about the trailer at NYCC while Graham praised it during the mother that is SDCC but now, you good folks that didn’t have the chance to attend the con finally have a chance to see what all the fuss is about as the first theatrical trailer for Pacific Rim has exploded onto the net, and in a big way. Oh, and the poster to the left is also new and gives you a good idea regarding the scale of these massive bots.
Below is the trailer but if the iTunes embed isn’t working I’ve included the UK trailer as well.
You can also visit iTunes to watch it in HD
Doesn’t it give you goosebumps while you watch it and then, by the end, isn’t your reaction something like this:
Nerdgasm.
For those of you planning to see The Hobbit this weekend, you’ll have a chance to experience the magnitude of this trailer on the big screen, the way it should be seen, and with full on surround sound. The trailer is very different from the one shown at the two comic conventions and I’m glad that it divides the footage of the human aspect and the action/robot/kaiju action pretty equally.
With a solid international cast including Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Clifton Collins, Jr. and a sequel already announced, expectations for this film are high but I have a pretty good feeling that come July 12th we’ll be more than happy with the result…let’s hope. You’ll be able to see it in 2D, 3D, and in IMAX.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes–a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)–who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
