Coming from humble origins of directing an indie film called Monsters for under $500K then jumping into the blockbuster world of Godzilla which had a budget of $160 million, it seems that Gareth Edwards directorial dreams have finally come true. But wait, what’s that? Known for making more dreams come true, Disney has just announced that is has signed Edwards to direct the first Star Wars spin-off film after Episode VII is released.
Firstly, how awesome is that? Congratulations to Gareth on a job well done and a job well earned.
Secondly, I think this guy is a talented and visionary director that could bring an interesting and wildly different vision to the Star Wars universe. While some people don’t think he cares about characters based on the results of Godzilla, I for one think his approach was perfect but, let’s be real, no one cares about the characters in a Godzilla film anyway. Star Wars will give him the opportunity to show what he’s really made of when it comes to character development, as they will be the focus since everyone already knows the world. The pressure is on but if he can pull it off he’ll have opportunities out the wazoo and will be able to essentially pick any project he wants.
Currently there is no info or name for the Star Wars film but it will be released in 3D on December 16, 2016.
What are your thoughts on this directorial choice?
