Well it’s now official and I couldn’t be more pleased with the decision, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have selected Monsters helmer, Gareth Edwards, to direct their new Godzilla reboot. I have featured Edwards on the site a few times, just watched his film Monsters, and have met the man himself, and taking all of that into consideration I fully support the decision to make him director, but only on one condition. Hit the jump to find out what that condition is.
I need to see him make another movie before moving on to a massive blockbuster like Godzilla. It’s not that I don’t trust that he will do a good job, I mean he is a master when it comes to special effects, but I want to see him direct an action movie instead of a small scale drama with solid effects scattered here and there. This will allow me to put my complete faith in his reboot of a creature that I grew up loving and, to this day, still do.
Edwards has been asked to work with Wanted director, Timur Bekmambetov, on a new “futuristic sci-fi” project which I think would be good practice for him. He is also rumored to be working with Merantau star Iko Uwais on a new action film, an “in between” project for both of them. If one or both of those films comes out half way decent, I’m all in for Edwards. He’s a great guy with a ton of potential waiting to be released, let’s just hope he can hold onto those low budget ideals that allow him to retain control of his movie and its quality.
A 2014 release date is what has been listed on IMDB but we’ll see if that actually happens. Is it too early to speculate about potential monster foes?
