You didn’t really think 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars would be the last Godzilla film, did you? You probably thought Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was the last Final the 13th movie, too. Why do you keep falling for that?
Anyway, since I’m not talking to any single person in particular I might as well move on to the latest news about Legendary Pictures’ version of Godzilla due out in 2012. Perhaps to placate fears of an American studio doing another botched and disliked version of the big green lizard like in 1998, Producer Brian Rogers insists that his Godzilla film will return the monster to what made the original series a hit in Japan – kicking the crap out of other monsters! Rogers went on to say “”I think I can safely say that there’ll be other monsters that Godzilla will fight. That’s what the fanbase wants to see. Not having that in the Sony version was a drawback. Godzilla fighting the US army was not in the spirit of the character.”
Rogers is right on the money here. The 1998 Godzilla film spent too much time focusing on the human characters as if Godzilla himself (herself? She did lay eggs in the 1998 film) smashing things wasn’t interesting enough (hint: it is!). If I wanted to see great characterization I’d go see a Pacino film, not Godzilla. Rogers also compared the film to a reboot in the same spirit as Batman Begins, saying that he wants the new Godzilla to be an updated version that reflects on all that made Godzilla great in the past five-plus decades (like monster fighting!) This isn’t just good news for fans of Godzilla, but good news for anyone who wants to see film remakes that actually do justice to the original versions. Take that, every other Hollywood studio!
Then again, what do you think… do you even care about seeing a new Godzilla flick?
