I can’t be the only one who notices that the poster for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D Re-release highlights only the best parts of the otherwise cruddy movie. You have Darth Maul, pod racers, Obi-Wan, and Yoda front and center. Wait, who’s missing? Oh right, Jar Jar Binks and any of the other stupid-looking, unnecessary, terrible-accented aliens like Watto, Boss Nass, and Nute Gunray, who were characters that were so memorable that I had to look their names up on Wikipedia. And annoying Jake Lloyd-as-Anakin Skywalker is nowhere to be found.
Overall though I think it’s a pretty disappointing poster considering how gorgeous some of the Star Wars posters have been in the past. I’m curious how well this will actually do in theaters though — George Lucas has faced tremendous backlash from his latest changes to the Star Wars films on the just-released Blu-ray set, and back in 2008 the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated film didn’t exactly do big business at the box office. Is it possible that the rabid Star Wars fanbase made made Lucas a billionaire has had enough?
We’ll get a taste of the 3D re-release in a trailer before The Three Musketeers. The whole shebang hits theaters in February.
