This was honestly the first superhero film that, literally, everyone could be excited about. A director who pays strict attention to details, is concerned about a story and has such a visionary style would be directing Hugh Jackman in a Wolverine sequel. Who would have thought?
Well now that’s all gone to shit…damnit! I can’t deny that Darren Aronofsky doesn’t have a good reason but this would have been the one Marvel movie to really watch because no one would have had any idea of what to expect from it.
Deadline reported that it had nothing to do with the script, the current situation in Japan or anything really film related for that matter. It was just poor timing due to personal reasons-recent breakup and custody battle over his child.
Darren had this to say: “As I talked more about the film with my collaborators at Fox, it became clear that the production of ‘The Wolverine’ would keep me out of the country for almost a year. I was not comfortable being away from my family for that length of time. I am sad that I won’t be able to see the project through, as it is a terrific script and I was very much looking forward to working with my friend, Hugh Jackman, again.”
Like I told you, it’s a good enough reason to leave such an awesome project. I was just really excited to see what he could do with a blockbuster, moving out of his comfort zone of artsy film and movies penned by his hand alone.
Fox had this to add in the official statement that was released: “While we are of course disappointed that Darren can’t do ‘The Wolverine’, we also understand and respect his reasons. Having done both ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘Black Swan’ with Darren, we know he is an extraordinary talent and we look forward to working with him on other projects in the future. Hugh Jackman and Fox both remain fully committed to making ‘The Wolverine’. We will regroup and move forward aggressively.”
I guess the real question that remains is, who will now direct the film and has it damaged Jackman’s morale and eagernesss to make the film? Think they’ll go with Danny Boyle now or, better yet, Lars von Trier? Who do you think would be a good fit for the film? Leave yor thoughts in the comments section below.
