This mistake was funny NOT to the people of Kazakhstan.
During the medal presentation ceremony for the 10th Arab Shooting Championship in Kuwait, Maria Dmitrienko had to stand as the “Kazakhstan National Anthem” played after she was awarded the gold medal. Unfortunately, someone royally messed up — the “national anthem” was instead the false one used in Sacha Baron Cohen‘s film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. You know, the one that had lyrics like “Kazakhstan greatest country in the world, all other countries are run by little girls. Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium! Other countries have inferior potassium” and “Kazakhstan, prostitutes cleanest in the region, except of course for Turkmenistan’s.”
Dmitrienko cracks a smile about it at the end, but Kazakhstan is not amused. I’m sure Borat would be surprised that a woman is allowed to shoot a gun. And luckily for Kuwait, Cohen’s next film, The Dictator, takes place in a fictional country, which prevents the chance of a similar screw-up in the future!
