According to the New York Post, a woman is suing FilmDistrict, the distributor of Drive, and the Emagine Novi Theater in Novi, Michigan (where she saw the film) because she believes the trailer for Drive was misleading. According to the story, the woman, Sarah Deming, believed from the film’s marketing that Drive was more in line with The Fast and the Furious but according to the suit, it “bore very little similarity to a chase, or race action film … having very little driving in the motion picture.”
Even if the film hadn’t been a hit with critics (you can check out Melissa’s review here!) this is a pretty stupid lawsuit. It especially doesn’t make sense that she’s suing the movie theater if her problem is with how the film is promoted. I doubt that it will get anywhere — with all the information out there on the Internet it’s sort of impossible to argue that you couldn’t find accurate information about the movie before you saw it. I also disagree that Drive‘s marketing made it out to be like The Fast and the Furious. I assume we won’t be hearing much about Ms. Deming’s case in the future.
