Princess Grace of Monaco and Academy Award winner Grace Kelly may have died in 1982 after suffering a stroke while behind the wheel of her car driving in Monaco, but her fairy tale story never ends. The American princess of Hollywood who became a real European princess, retiring from the height of her acting career, is now being honored in the movie Grace of Monaco.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Pierre-Ange Le Pogam has acquired the script to the film written by Arash Amel (The Expatriate). The story of Kelly’s rise to fame opposite such legendary actors as Bing Crosby and Gary Cooper, as well as playing a leading lady for a number of Alfred Hitchock films will not be seen in this movie. It follows in a The King’s Speech kind of way “a six month period in 1962 when the city-state got into a heated dispute with France, which grew tired of the petite principality being a tax haven. Kelly, still relatively new in her role as princess, maneuvered behind the scenes to save Monaco from a coup.”
Surely Le Pogam’s new production company Stone Angel will be backing the project that does not currently have a director or prospective cast. Although a few names come to mind for the coveted part of Princess Grace, who would have been 33 years old at the time of the movie, including Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, January Jones, or Charlize Theron, who can be seen in the latest ad campaign for Dior’s J’adore fragrance where digital images of Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, and Marlene Dietrich are animated to celebrate the label with Theron.
I’m not entirely surprised about the news of this movie in the works since there’s so much hype around Michelle Williams’ performance in the upcoming My Week with Marilyn as Monroe or Anne Hathaway possibly portraying Judy Garland. Apparently embracing old Hollywood is what’s going to revamp Hollywood today.
Keep checking back with Movie Buzzers because we’ll be following this story as all the details emerge. Would you go see a movie about Grace Kelly’s post-Hollywood years as the Princess of Monaco? Are you a fan of Kelly’s work with Hitchcock?
