As 2011 comes to an end, 2012 is about to hit the ground running cinematically and will not miss a beat. Granted the early months aren’t known for having huge blockbusters, but the summer months in 2012 will clearly make up for it along with a huge December line-up. Below are my most anticipated films 0f 2012, some are no brainer’s but others might have people discussing. As with any list this is my personal opinion so feel free to agree or disagree with the choices, everyone has different opinions. Some of the films below don’t have release dates yet so keep and eye out in the future for them.
Here’s to hoping 2012 is better than 2011
10. The Amazing Spider-Man
This was probably one of my more difficult choices for this list. I really want to like this movie after the horror that was Spider-Man 3 but I’m still a bit on the fence about it. The main reason is due to the villain in the film, The Lizard (Rhys Ifans). Character wise there is no villain better than the Lizard in the Spider-Man series but from the images shown at Comic-Con this year and the toys that are gradually hitting the shelves, he really looks a bit off. Besides that, the film looks like it has amazing potential and I feel that Andrew Garfield will make an amazing Peter Parker and give the film the dark edge it needs. Not to mention they are going the Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) route as oppose to Mary Jane, thank God!
Release: July 3, 2012
9. World War Z
Some may feel a bit tired of the Zombie genre, but they need to hold out for just a bit longer. World War Z doesn’t have a trailer out yet, but from the few production photos and the reports coming from the set, it sounds epic. Based off the book by Max Brooks, the film is suppose to be a bit different. Unlike the book, the movie will not be a bunch of stories of a U.N worker publishing his first-person experiences in the post-apocalyptic world. Instead it will be Brad Pitt trying to survive in the world being over run by zombies. The downfall is that we have to wait till December for the film and it just so happens to be when the world is suppose to end… Foreshadowing???
Release: December 21, 2012
8. Skyfall
There really isn’t much to say right now about Skyfall given that production has just recently started and very little has been released about the film. Regardless, if the film is anything like Casino Royale and less like Quantum of Solace we should have a pretty great Bond film. There have been rumors that Daniel Craig is reportedly going to sign on to do five more Bond films (which would put him past Sir Sean Connery) but this has yet to be confirmed. It’s another Bond flick so what isn’t there to be excited about.
Release: November 9, 2012
7. Argo
Who would have thought that Ben Affleck would become such an amazing director? First with Gone Baby Gone and then with his Bank Heist film The Town. His latest film is Argo, which is based on a true story about a CIA crew posing as the production staff for a sci-fi film while trying to extract diplomatic hostages from Iran in 1979. Sound very interesting and though it seems like it will differ from his first two films, I have great confidence in Affleck and know he will deliver once again.
Release: September 14, 2012
6. Prometheus
Ridley Scott’s return to a genre he put on the map. Though Prometheus is not a prequel to Alien or is suppose to be related to it other then the Aliens DNA, this film looks like it will be sick (in a good way). The clips that were shown at Comic Con this year along with the recent trailer and set photos that have been released recently just shows how amazing Scott is and how detail oriented he is with his films. Throw in Charlize Theron and this film has no way it can fail. I hope they don’t show any of the aliens until the film actually hits but I can’t help but wonder what the hell those things are going to look like.
Release: June 08, 2012
5. Knights of Badassdom
Some might be thinking WTF is this, those same people probably said the same thing about the surprise hit Attack the Block in 2011. Knights of Badassdon, in my opinion and I hope in others, will be the Attack the Block of 2012. Without even talking about the film I will mention one actor in the film and you should be sold immediately. . . . Peter Dinklage. If that does nothing for you then there is also Summer Glau, Ryan Kwanten and Steve Zahn. The film, in a nutshell, is about a group of live action role-players (LARP) who accidentally summon a succubus demon from the underworld and have to figure out a way to stop the succubus who has possessed Ryan Kwanten’s ex-girlfriend. This was one of my most anticipated panels to cover at Comic Con this past year and the trailer that they showed for the film looked awesome. There is everything you could want in a film, comedy, horror, suspense, action, the list goes on and on. Will some be turned off because it seems a bit nerdy? Probably, but I want to advise against it because you will miss out on what I think will be a great film. I don’t know if itwill release nationwide, but as soon as distribution information is released I will be sure to post it.
Release: Spring 2012
4. Django Unchained
Tarantino, Tarantino, Tarantino. Django Unchained is his first film since one of my favorites of all time, Inglorious Basterds, and he has put together one hell of a cast for his next feature which is about a slave-turned-bounty hunter, who sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner with the help of his mentor. Here is just a short list of actors in the film: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jamie Foxx, Christopher Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and the list goes on. This is a film that I feel won’t come out on its anticipated release date and might get pushed back till 2013. I really hope I am wrong on that but for some reason when you have Tarantino directing a film, you never know what will happen.
Release: December 25, 2012
3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The movie that has had more issues, legal troubles, and Peter Jackson troubles is finally being made and we can expect to see it in 2012 finally. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first of two films which Jackson will release to complete his Lord of the Rings series and finally move on to something else. Though I have never read the actual book, I hear it is phenomenal and an amazing read. If I didn’t watch so many movies, I might have time to read it, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Luckily for me the movie is coming out and from the production videos Jackson has been releasing along with the trailer that just hit, I have a lot to look forward to in the film. This is the story that started it all, before The Lord of the Rings there was the Hobbit and it only took 11 years since Fellowship for it to be made.
Release: December 14, 2012
2. The Avengers
This was really tough for me but I had to move The Avengers from the first to second spot. I have been waiting for this film since Iron Man was first announced and Marvel’s plan to build the universe and gradually get to The Avengers. We have seen more production photos for this film then any other thus far and yet we still aren’t sure what exactly we are witnessing. We know the villain is Loki but could there be a greater villain or villains? I won’t say who or what that could be due to for spoiler reasons if it’s true, but it wouldn’t shock me if Loki isn’t the main villain. Oh and did I forget this is Joss Whedon’s first major blockbuster film. The guy has killed it in everything else he has directed so I have very high expectations for this film and can’t wait for all the hidden gems within it.
Release: May 4, 2012
1. The Dark Knight Rises
Do I really have to say anything about this movie? It will break records and will be one of, if not, the greatest film of 2012. After seeing the 6 minute prologue, my anticipation for the film has only grown. Throw in some of the famous viral marketing that is sure to pick up soon and July can’t come soon enough. This film is going to have a lot of shock value for people who don’t know what to really expect and that is what will make this film so great. If you haven’t been following the production photos or the spoilers online about the film, let me just say get ready for one hell of a ride. The legend ends! Christopher Nolan I want to say thank you in advance for this film.
Release: July 20, 2012
Honorable Mentions: Goon,The Hunger Games, American Reunion, The Bourne Legacy and The Great Gatsby
