Some may disagree with me but I feel that A Christmas Story is hands down the greatest Christmas film of all time and will never be outdone. That being said, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine someone would dare try to create a sequel to my beloved film and yet, here I sit in utter shock by what I just witnessed. When I saw the announcement, my reaction, as I’m assuming was everyone’s reaction, was this is not real, then I saw the trailer and that’s when I knew someone out there in Hollywood hates Christmas.
The fact that this is being labeled as the “Official Sequel,” makes it that much worse and which ever studio head felt this was a great idea needs to be tarred and feathered. Here is the synopsis from the press release, which makes me even more furious.
The original, traditional, one-hundred-percent, red-blooded, two-fisted, All-American Christmas continues five years later with Ralphie (Braeden Lemasters), Randy (Valin Shinyei), Mom(Stacey Travis), and the Old Man (Daniel Stern). This time, Ralphie has his eyes fixed on a car. But trouble is sure to follow.
And before you watch the trailer, yes, “Dad” is Marv from Home Alone.
Ok so the only good thing that comes from watching the trailer is that this will never see the inside of a theater and it will be a straight to DVD/Blu Ray, however this still exists. The major issues I have besides of the fact that a sequel is totally unnecessary is that although this is suppose to be five years later “Mom” and “Dad” look younger and the kids are older and it seems they are trying to play too much off of what made the original such a hit (ex: Leg Lamp, Furnace battles, gift from the crazy aunt, etc.)
A Christmas Story 2 will release on Blu-ray and DVD October 30,2012 and if you were able to make it through the entire trailer you will notice that it also comes in a combo pack that includes the original film as well. Unless we get a review copy, I plan on never watching this film and will stick to enjoying the 24 hour marathon of the original on TBS come December 24th-25th.
