Pretty much all of us here at Movie Buzzers are big fans of Guillermo del Toro and I can personally say I couldn’t be more thrilled that he has become a “name” director over the last few years. In fact, del Toro has been such a success that his name is being tossed around for virtually any movie in the pipeline that could benefit from his visionary touch (which is most of them).
One of those projects actually happened quite by accident. Back in November, Latino Review reported that del Toro was planning to do a movie titled Heaven Sent that would team up many of DC Comic’s supernatural characters, including “Deadman, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Phantom Stranger, Zatanna, Zatara, and Sargon as well as Etrigan the Demon.” For those into the supernatural side of DC Comics, that’s a virtual dream line-up for a movie that would be a cross between del Toro’s Hellboy and The Avengers. Two days later on his own message board del Toro said he would “love” to make the movie. However, with del Toro hard at work on finishing Pacific Rim there wasn’t any follow-up.
Well, when an insanely talented director says that he wants to make a movie about some characters that Warner Bros. already owns and he already has a relationship with that studio, is there any doubt that the powers-that-be aren’t going to at least consider it? IGN has an exclusive interview with del Toro in which he reveals that the movie is now being written under the (much better) title Dark Universe. Guillermo del Toro explains that he is working on an outline and has found the “perfect” writer who has already agreed to write the script, though he won’t say who it is.
I’ve been saying for a long time that DC Comics has a stable of characters that could all make awesome films — and many of them aren’t traditional superheroes. Now that Christopher Nolan has wrapped up his Batman trilogy and the Superman films are getting going, Warner Bros. (which owns DC Comics) should be exploring the opportunities these other characters offer. Just because Jonah Hex was a bomb (and that movie was a horrible representation of Jonah Hex) doesn’t mean that the only comic book movies that sell are superheroes.
And at the very least this means we’ll get to see a John Constantine who is actually English? Sorry Keanu Reeves — you just didn’t cut it!
