I thought the Doom 3D reboot would be my ridiculous story of the week, but I should know by now that you never know what Hollywood might come up with next…
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that producers Scott Glassgold and Raymond Brothers (Hurricane Season) have made a deal with Macy’s to create a family film based on the long-running Thanksgiving Day Parade, a staple of the holiday. Though the Thanksgiving Day Parade provided a memorable setting to the opening scenes of the classic Miracle on 34th Street, this will be the first time there will be a feature film about the parade itself. Above you can see one of the storyboards Glassgold and Brothers comissioned artist Joel Venti (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Gulliver’s Travels, Thor) to create as part of their pitch to Macy’s. There’s no script yet, but Glassgold and Brothers have secured the exclusive rights to base a film on the parade — they were surely hotly contested, I imagine.
In all honesty, I don’t think this is the worst idea ever — it could turn out to be a fun family film (in 3D no doubt) like Night at the Museum with some kind of adventure going on — although I could also envision a hardcore action movie involving a terrorist attack with poison gas balloons like the Joker parade in Tim Burton’s Batman. This will NOT be that film, of course, but part of me really wants to see Die Hard: Thanksgiving with that plot. So there’s a possibility of a good film here, though I hope it does not take the place of the only true Thanksgiving classic film: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Why that movie isn’t on a 24 hour TV marathon on Turkey Day is a mystery to me.
