Since last year’s romantic comedy Going the Distance, Drew Barrymore has been spending a lot of time behind the camera. Her latest project is Heist Society, where she has just signed on as producer and director, according to Total Film.
Barrymore’s Whip It writer, Shauna Cross has also joined the project to adapt the script, which is set to center around “A young woman from a family of master thieves turns her back on her inherited lifestyle. She’s drawn back into the game when her father is accused of pinching a gangster’s art collection, and she puts together a team in an attempt to steal the missing goods back.”
The original young adult novel is written by Ally Carter, a piece which has been under a very high-priced bidding war for Warner Bros. The Hollywood Reporter also adds that for the purpose of the movie, the ages of the characters will be increased into their twenties, while Barrymore is supervising the writing as well.
The Grey Gardens actress has much on her plate at the moment since the romance / drama Everybody Love Whales in which she stars alongside Kristen Bell and John Krasinsky. In addition, it is rumored that Barrymore is linked to a Wizard of Oz spin-off Surrendering Dorothy. She is also supposed to direct How To Be Single, but won’t be beginning her production on Heist until after the New Line romantic comedy is completed. However, there are no details regarding whether or not the Golden Globe winner will star in any of these movies.
Are you familiar with Carter’s novel? Who do you think should be cast in the film? Do you think Barrymore has the chops to pull off a sort-of action movie like this?
