Everybody has been talking non-stop about Natalie Portman’s transformation in Black Swan, and last year we saw Joseph Gordon-Levitt grow up from a lovesick artist in (500) Days of Summer to a sort-of action star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception. When you put those two together and give them a serious make-under, you get Hesher, a new movie which also stars Rainn Wilson (The Office) and youngster Devin Brochu (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past). Hit the jump for more images and the unusually entertaining trailer!
According to the Huffington Post, the movie, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, is “a drama about a family that loses their matriarch, and their way. Rainn Wilson stars as a father broken and distraught over the loss of his wife, while Gordon-Levitt plays an aimless, angry man who befriends Wilson’s son.”
Portman plays a cashier named Nicole, who seems to be the object of young T.J.’s affection. These images show the critically acclaimed actress “with dowdy clothes, thick glasses and thoroughly unkempt tresses,” as per Marie Claire U.K. This is a far cry from how we’ve seen the Israeli-born mother-to-be during this year’s awards season.
The movie’s official website provides more details about the story with: “Loud music. Pornography. Burning sh*t to the ground. These are a few of Hesher‘s favorite things. And they are what Hesher brings into the lives of T.J. and his father, Paul when he takes up residence in their garage uninvited. Grief-stricken by the loss of T.J.’s mother in a car accident, Paul can‘t muster the strength to evict the strange squatter, and soon the long-haired, tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher‘s anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and help them embrace life once more.”
Short director / writer of I Love Sarah Jane Spencer Susser is behind Hesher, along with Animal Kingdom director / writer David Michod, based on the story by Brian Charles Frank.
JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray reviews the film’s Sundance premiere positively with: “It’s unconventional, edgy, and manages to accomplish something it seems can only be pulled off by taking the indie route; it successfully merges comedy and drama.” He also adds, “If this film manages to breakout when it finally gets a general release, I could see this being an iconic role for Levitt. He’s one of those guys who, over the last few years, has really started to come into his own, giving a series of impressive performances in films.”
Hesher is set for an April 2011 release. Portman also stars in Your Highness which will open in April, and then May we will see her in the action-adventure drama Thor. In September, Gordon-Levitt can be seen in 50-50 with Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick, as well as the action-thriller Premium Rush early next year.
