Despite star Julie Delpy claiming that the third film in Richard Linklater’s Before series — which started with Before Sunrise (1995) and was followed by Before Sunset (2004) and follows the “will they or won’t they” international romance between Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) — would not shoot until “next summer” (according to Delpy herself!), the three have obviously pulled a fast one on everyone. That’s because it’s been revealed that Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy have just wrapped on Before Midnight this week! The announcement came with the above image, which comes from Deadline. Like the previous sequel, the three also wrote the script together. It was accompanied by the following statement: “It’s great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight.”
Though it won’t screen there, Linklater’s team will try to sell the project at the Toronto International Film Festival. Though neither film made much money — each grossed a bit over $5 million in the U.S. — they were made on the cheap and have proven to be popular with audiences, with the second film receiving a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination.
Since this will likely be released in 2013, it marks another nine-year gap between the release of the sequels. I can’t wait to see Before Midnight, but that means I’ll probably end up looking forward to the next film in… well, 2022!
