There is a rather long list of films that should never be remade for numerous reasons. Maybe it’s because the original was amazing and there is no need for a remake or maybe, in the case of the 80’s film Police Academy, there is no rhyme or reason to make a remake because the six sequels and a failed TV show pretty much killed the series. None the less, New Line has found a director to remake the franchise and sadly we can expect a new version of the film in the near future.
Deadline has reported that Scott Zabielski has been hired by New Line to direct the remake. Now if you are thinking who the heck is Scott Zabielski, you are not alone. Zabielski will be making his feature directorial debut which is a huge shift from his recent directorial job on Comedy Central’s show, Tosh.O. Also it is interesting to know that Zabielski actually went through police academy and is a reserve police officer in West Hollywood.
This is still a very strange move by New Line and they better have a damn good idea on how they want to approach this film. It will be hard to think of a Police Academy movie without Michael Winslow‘s crazy beat box noises and Bobcat Goldthwait’s awkward laugh. I’m sure Steve Guttenberg isn’t busy so he will probably be available to make an appearance in the film. Being a child of the 80’s, I grew up with these films, heck I even had the toys when those came out. Were they comedic? Yes, to an extent, but the series kind of lost its charm around Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol. Here’s to hoping New Line knows what they are doing with this franchise.
